Youth Programs

Youth and Family Counseling
Each year, Mercer Street Friends Counseling Services works with 120 young people, ages twelve to nineteen, and their families. Participants may be referred by the court system, community members, other agencies, or they may self-refer. Services and interventions are tailored to the needs of each particular young person and/or family and may include components such as anger management, family communication and relationship enhancement, parent education, parenting skills training, and drug and alcohol counseling. All of these services are designed to help the individual and/or family identify their strengths, challenges and resources in order to develop more effective means of meeting their needs.

Mercer Street Friends Youth Services Counseling Program also partners with other agencies in order to provide counseling support and behavioral services. These are relationships in which therapists from Mercer Street Friends provide clinical services as a component of other programs that serve young people. If your agency or other community-based organization would like to partner with us to provide on-site clinical services for youth and families, please contact Asia Jones, Director of Children and Youth Services program at 609.656.5250.

Back On Track
The Back On Track program, which operates in conjunction with the Trenton Police Department, provides an alternative to Family Court for youth, ages twelve to eighteen, who have committed a minor or first offense. The program, which takes place after school and during the summer, offers group and individual counseling, educational and cultural enrichment, and recreation and community service activities. It provides safe, pro-social activities for young people.
Each participant is required to attend for twelve weeks, but many continue to attend after they have fulfilled their requirements.

For more information, please contact Asia Jones, Director of Children and Youth Services program at 609.656.5250.

Other Services
Each year, the Youth Services Programs aim to provide a variety of services that help develop life skills and job readiness training. Some of the programs that we have provided include the Back on Track Program, the Youth Enrichment Program, Urban Gateway and the Creative Arts Program. While we strive to provide these programs, they are heavily determined by funding. Please contact the program directly to determine which programs are active.
